Purpose

The Work-Study Program is a work-exchange initiative rooted in equity, accessibility, and community care. Neighborhood residents and yoga practitioners support studio operations in exchange for weekly yoga classes. This program aligns with our mission to make healing, movement, and connection available to all, regardless of financial circumstances.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Washington Heights is a vibrant, working-class neighborhood with a rich cultural history. While yoga and wellness practices offer incredible benefits, they often remain financially inaccessible to many. The Work-Study Program responds to that reality by offering:

•       A pathway into yoga for low-income community members

•       A sense of ownership and belonging in wellness spaces

•       A supportive stepping stone into deeper practice and teacher training

•       A reciprocal structure that values contribution, not charity

This initiative centers on preserving dignity and shared purpose; everyone involved contributes meaningfully, and everyone receives support.

How the Exchange Works

The Work-Study program is built on a simple, transparent exchange:

  • Shift worked = free unlimited classes for 7 days

  • Shift missed = no classes for that week

  • Shift missed 3+ times without a substitute = removed from work-study program

This structure ensures reliability while maintaining the integrity of the exchange. Three no-shows or repeated lateness may result in removal from the program.
