  • Microbes June 27 - July 3, 2024

Microbes are where it all starts. But they are so small, why are they important at all? “Small Beings Make a Big Difference” will be our scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for this week. We will investigate what microbes are, where they are and how they impact our lives. We will take field trips, use microscopes, and create theater, art, yoga and meditation that all relate to this incredible world of the smallest among us. This week will include a trip to The Invisible World at AMNH.

  • Butterflies July 8 -12, 2024

The beauty of the butterly is in its metamorphosis. Change will be the scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for this week while we watch our live butterfly larvae eat its way to the pupa stage where it spins its chrysalis and begin its journey to adulthood. The entire process takes three weeks so stay tuned for week four when they hatch! This week will include a trip to The Butterfly Pavilion at AMNH.

  • Insects July 15 - 19, 2024

Insects are a big part of summer. They’re everywhere and seem to eat everything! They even bite and sting us sometimes. And we couldn’t live without them! Interdependence will be our scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for this week. This week will include a trip to The insectarium at AMNH.

  • Birds July 22 -26

Our summer birds are so busy caring for their homes and chldren. Care and Compassion will be our scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for this week. Every day brings a new adventure in our exploration of birds in their natural habitats caring for their homes and families, and will include a visit to the AMNH exhibit North American Birds.

  • Whales July 29 - August 2

During this week we’ll explore the largest animal on Earth today — the blue whale — once on the brink of extinction. All whales have unique and complex ways of communicating and communication will be our scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for the week. We will listen and learn, measure and paint, and write stories and create theater about these huge, amazing creatures. How big are they really? What would it be like to stand in their belly? What do their “songs” mean? And what makes a whale, a whale? Our trip to Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life at AMNH will help us answer these questions and more!

  • Elephants August 5 - 9

Did you know that elephants have around 40,000 muscles in their trunk? Or that they walk on their tippy toes? They are also the largest land animal with the biggest brain of all land creatures. There are so many fascinating facts about elephants and our trip he AMNH to explore The Secret World of Elephants during this week will help us discover more! Adaptation will be the scientific, artistic and mindfulness theme for this week.

About HMY Summer Camp

The integrated curriculum of HMY summer program was developed by Amy Davis, a graduate of the Masters in Education program at Bank Street College of Education where the philosophy is to train educators to develop curriculum that uses a, “…developmental-interaction approach, [which] recognizes that all individuals learn best when they are actively engaged with materials, ideas, and people, and that authentic growth requires diverse and nurturing opportunities for ongoing social, emotional, and cognitive development.” Our integrated, developmentally appropriate program will not only be educational and fun but will also provide ample opportunity for children to explore their interests and interact with other like-minded individuals. They will have opportunities to communicate what’s been learned through a variety of mediums including writing, fine art, and theater. Liz Livingston will be joining our team of remarkable educators three afternoons a week to explore the theatrical side of these amazing animals — a unique and exciting new way to integrate theater with science. And, yoga and meditation will (of course) continue to be a part of everyday here at HMY no matter what age we are serving!
